The various sprays and treatments sold in stores may be effective for killing and repelling pests, but these methods of home pest control could contain toxic chemicals that do more harm than good. Thankfully, you can rid your home of many common insects without the use of harsh chemicals that harm the air, your garden, and the health of your family. Here are a few homemade options to consider for natural, safe, and effective pest control.

Vegetable Oil

You may be surprised to learn that a common ingredient in your pantry can be used to deter insects from your home and garden. A combination of vegetable oil and household soap can kill aphids, mites, and a variety of other pests without the use of harsh, toxic chemicals.

To use, combine 1 cup of vegetable oil and 1 tablespoon of mild castile soap in a bottle. Shake to mix. When it is time to apply the pesticide to your home or plants in your garden, combine 2 tablespoons of the oil and soap solution with 1 quart or water. Then, spray the homemade pest deterrent onto surfaces in your home and garden.

Garlic Spray

Garlic is another common ingredient found in most homes. The strong aroma acts as a natural insecticide, ridding your home and garden of a variety of pests without toxic ingredients that can harm your health or the food and plants in your garden.

To create this natural home pest control, place two whole bulbs of garlic into a food processor. Puree them for a few minutes in the processor with a small amount of water. Strain the garlic mixture into a jar and add ½ cup of vegetable oil and 1 teaspoon of mild liquid soap.

When it is time to use, add 1 cup of the garlic mixture to a 1 quart of water and then spray onto areas of your home and garden to repel insects.

Neem Oil

Neem oil is a biodegradable ingredient that is safe to use around children, pets, and food. It is also naturally antibacterial and antifungal, so it is a smart option for repelling insects and fungus that infect your plants and food in your garden.

Search for neem oil at your local home improvement store or lawn and garden center. It’s also available through retailers online. To create an insecticide, combine 2 teaspoons of neem oil with 1 teaspoon of liquid soap. Shake thoroughly before mixing the oil and soap solution with 1 quart of water. Add to an outdoor sprayer and apply to your garden and lawn for effective pest control.

Whether you want to protect your home and family from bugs or you want to ensure your garden plants and food remain healthy and safe, all natural solutions are an excellent choice.
